AYUSH Licensing for Ayurvedic, Herbal & Cosmetic Products (2026)
The Ministry of AYUSH regulates Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy products in India. Any business manufacturing or selling Ayurvedic, herbal, or related cosmetic products must hold the appropriate AYUSH licence.
Types of AYUSH Licences
- Manufacturing Licence: For companies making Ayurvedic/herbal medicines in their own facility.
- Loan Licence: For brands that manufacture through a third-party GMP-certified unit.
- Contract Manufacturing: Where production is outsourced under the brand owner's licence.
- AYUSH Cosmetic / Approval: For herbal cosmetic products.
Key Requirements
- GMP certification (Good Manufacturing Practices) for the manufacturing unit.
- A qualified Ayurvedic expert / technical staff on the team.
- Adequate premises, equipment, and an in-house or approved testing lab.
- Product formulation sheets and labels compliant with AYUSH norms.
The Application Process
- Step 1: Set up a compliant manufacturing facility (or partner with a GMP unit for a loan licence).
- Step 2: Apply to the State Licensing Authority with formulations, staff credentials, and premises proof.
- Step 3: Undergo a facility inspection.
- Step 4: Receive the licence, after which each product line is approved.
Timeline
Depending on the state and facility readiness, licensing typically takes 1–3 months. Loan licences are faster since no new facility inspection is needed.
