BIS Certification Complete Guide: ISI Mark, CRS and FMCS
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certifies that products meet Indian standards. For many electronics and manufactured goods, BIS certification is mandatory before import or sale.
Three schemes
- CRS (Compulsory Registration Scheme): a self-declaration-based registration for a growing list of electronics and IT products (laptops, adapters, LED products, batteries).
- ISI Mark Scheme: product certification for notified categories (appliances, industrial goods) allowing use of the ISI mark.
- FMCS (Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme): the route for overseas factories to obtain the ISI mark.
The CRS process
- Confirm your product is in the CRS list
- Test the sample at a BIS-recognised Indian laboratory
- Apply through an Authorised Indian Representative (AIR)
- BIS reviews the test report and application
- Registration number (R-number) is issued for labelling
The Authorised Indian Representative
Foreign manufacturers must appoint an AIR in India who is the responsible entity and regulatory point of contact — choose a reliable partner.
Labelling & marking
Certified products must display the BIS standard mark and R-number. Missing or incorrect marking causes customs and sales problems.
Key considerations
- Testing must be done at Indian recognised labs
- Confirm registration scope by model/variant
- Track renewal deadlines
- QCOs (Quality Control Orders) keep expanding the mandatory list
