FSSAI License: Basic, State or Central — Which One Do You Need?

Any business dealing in food — manufacturing, storage, distribution, retail or import — must be registered or licensed with FSSAI.
The three tiers
- Basic Registration: turnover up to ₹12 lakh (small/petty businesses)
- State License: turnover ₹12 lakh–₹20 crore
- Central License: turnover above ₹20 crore, or importers/exporters and large operations
Importers
Food importers always need a Central License that includes import activity, plus an Import Clearance (NOC) at the port.
Labelling
Food labels must show veg/non-veg mark, nutrition, ingredients, MRP, importer details and FSSAI number.
