IEC (Import Export Code) Registration in India: Complete 2026 Guide
The Import Export Code (IEC) is a 10-digit code issued by the DGFT that is mandatory for anyone importing into or exporting out of India. It is a one-time registration linked to your PAN — but it now requires an annual confirmation to stay active.
Who Needs an IEC?
- Any business or individual importing goods for commercial use.
- Exporters of goods or services claiming benefits under the Foreign Trade Policy.
- E-commerce sellers shipping internationally.
Purely service exporters who do not claim FTP benefits and are covered under GST may not strictly need an IEC, but most banks require it to process foreign remittances.
Documents Required
- PAN card of the business or individual.
- Aadhaar / identity proof of the proprietor, partners, or directors.
- Proof of business address (electricity bill, rent agreement).
- Cancelled cheque or bank certificate.
The DGFT Online Process
- Step 1: Register on the DGFT portal with your PAN and a valid email and mobile.
- Step 2: Complete the IEC application (ANF-2A) with business and bank details.
- Step 3: Pay the government fee of ₹500 and submit using DSC or Aadhaar e-sign.
- Step 4: The IEC is generated electronically, usually within 1–2 working days.
Mandatory Annual Update
Since 2021, every IEC holder must update and confirm their IEC details between April and June each year, even if nothing has changed. An IEC that is not updated is deactivated and cannot be used for customs clearance until reactivated.
IEC and Related Registrations
Exporters often pair the IEC with customs and ICEGATE registration, an DGFT DSC, and RCMC from the relevant export promotion council.
Statura handles IEC registration and annual updates along with the wider customs and trade compliance stack.
