Launching a D2C Brand in India: The Complete Playbook
India's direct-to-consumer boom is real, but launching well takes more than a website. This playbook covers every layer of a D2C launch.
1. Legal and tax foundation
Register your entity and GST, secure a trademark early (India is first-to-file), and set up compliant invoicing. Product categories like beauty and food need CDSCO/FSSAI approvals.
2. Payments
Support UPI (the dominant method), cards, netbanking, wallets and Cash on Delivery, which still drives a large share of orders. Integrate a gateway like Razorpay, Cashfree or PayU.
3. Channels
Combine your own store (Shopify or custom) with marketplaces (Amazon, Flipkart, Nykaa). Your store protects margin and customer data; marketplaces bring immediate traffic and trust.
4. Logistics and RTO
Use 3PL or marketplace fulfilment for pan-India delivery and returns. Plan for a high RTO (return-to-origin) rate on COD orders and design address verification and prepaid incentives to reduce it.
5. Growth engine
- Performance ads on Meta and Google
- Influencer marketing (micro-creators are cost-efficient)
- SEO and content for durable traffic
- WhatsApp and email for retention and repeat orders
6. Metrics that matter
Track CAC, contribution margin, RTO rate and repeat-purchase rate relentlessly — profitable D2C is won on unit economics, not vanity metrics.
