The Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) rules govern how pre-packaged goods are labelled and sold in India. Importers and packers need an LMPC registration.
Who needs it
Any importer of pre-packaged commodities, and manufacturers/packers who pack goods for retail sale. Registration is required before the goods are imported or sold.
Mandatory label declarations
- Name & address of manufacturer/importer
- Country of origin
- Net quantity, MRP (inclusive of taxes)
- Month/year of import or manufacture
- Consumer care details
Why it matters
Non-compliant labels are a leading cause of customs delays and penalties. Registration is issued by the Legal Metrology department (central or state depending on scope).
