How to Register for GST: Step-by-Step Process with Documents
GST registration is filed online at gst.gov.in using Form GST REG-01, with PAN, Aadhaar, business address proof and bank account details. It is mandatory once turnover crosses ₹40 lakh for goods or ₹20 lakh for services (lower thresholds in special-category states), and compulsory regardless of turnover for inter-state sellers, e-commerce sellers and importers/exporters.
Step-by-step process
- Generate a Temporary Reference Number (TRN): Enter PAN, mobile number and email on the GST portal; verify via OTP.
- Fill Part B of REG-01: Business details, promoter/partner details, place of business, goods/services (HSN/SAC), and bank account.
- Upload documents: PAN, address proof, bank proof, photographs, and authorisation letter (for partnerships/companies).
- Aadhaar authentication: e-KYC via OTP speeds up approval; skipping it can trigger physical verification.
- Application Reference Number (ARN) generated: You can track status using the ARN.
- GSTIN issued: Typically within 3–7 working days if documents are in order; up to 30 days if physical verification is required.
Documents checklist
- PAN card of the business/proprietor
- Certificate of incorporation or partnership deed (for companies/firms)
- Identity and address proof of promoters/partners
- Proof of business address (rent agreement + NOC, or ownership document)
- Bank account statement or cancelled cheque
- Digital Signature Certificate (for companies/LLPs)
Common reasons for rejection or delay
Mismatched name/address across documents, an incomplete or unclear address proof, failing Aadhaar authentication, or using a residential address without proper NOC for a commercial business are the most frequent causes of delay.
After registration
You must start charging GST on invoices, file GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B monthly or quarterly, and display your GSTIN at your place of business. Multi-state operations need a separate GSTIN per state.
Statura handles GST registration end-to-end and manages your ongoing monthly filings.
