GST Audit and Assessment: What Triggers One and How to Respond

A GST department audit or assessment is typically triggered by mismatches between your GSTR-1, GSTR-3B and GSTR-2B, unusually high refund claims, industry risk-profiling by the department's analytics, or random selection. The first signal is usually a notice (commonly Form ASMT-10) pointing to a specific discrepancy — you must respond within the stated deadline or face a demand order.

Common triggers for scrutiny

  • Mismatch between outward supplies declared (GSTR-1) and tax paid (GSTR-3B)
  • Input tax credit claimed exceeding what's reflected in GSTR-2B
  • Sudden spikes in turnover or refund claims compared to prior periods
  • E-way bill data inconsistent with invoice/return data
  • Industry sectors flagged for higher evasion risk by departmental analytics

How to respond to a scrutiny notice

  1. Read the notice carefully to identify the exact discrepancy cited and the response deadline
  2. Reconcile your books against GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, GSTR-2B and e-way bill records for the period
  3. Prepare a written explanation with supporting documents (invoices, ledgers, bank statements)
  4. File the reply on the GST portal within the deadline — typically 30 days, though notices specify the exact window
  5. If the explanation is accepted, the matter is closed (Form ASMT-12); if not, it may proceed to a formal demand notice

What happens if you don't respond

The officer can proceed to a best-judgment assessment or issue a formal demand (Show Cause Notice under Section 73/74), which can include the tax amount, interest, and penalty — often far more costly and harder to contest than addressing the original scrutiny notice.

How to reduce audit risk proactively

Monthly reconciliation of GSTR-1/3B/2B before filing, timely vendor follow-up for missing invoices, and accurate HSN classification are the most effective ways to avoid triggering scrutiny in the first place.
