Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) in India: Types, Uses & How to Apply

What is a Digital Signature Certificate?

A Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is an electronic equivalent of a physical signature or stamp. It is issued by a licensed Certifying Authority (CA) under the Information Technology Act, 2000 and provides a secure and authentic way to electronically sign documents. The DSC contains the holder's name, public key, serial number, expiry date, and the digital signature of the issuing CA.

Where is a DSC Mandatory?

  • MCA: SPICe+, AOC-4, MGT-7 and all ROC forms
  • Income Tax: E-filing returns for companies, LLPs, and audit cases
  • GST: Registration, amendment, and certain returns for companies
  • Customs (ICEGATE): Import/export declarations
  • EPFO/ESIC: Employer registration and compliance filings
  • DGFT: IEC (Import Export Code) and licensing applications
  • GeM Portal: Government e-Marketplace vendor registration
  • E-Tendering: Government tenders and procurement portals
  • IP India: Patent and trademark filings

Types of DSC in India

Class 3 DSC (Most Common)

The highest and most trusted class of DSC. Mandatory for all MCA, GST, income tax, customs, and tender-related filings. Available as:

  • Signing Only: Used only to digitally sign documents
  • Signing + Encryption: Combines document signing with encryption for secure data transmission

Document Signer DSC

Used by organisations to bulk-sign large volumes of documents (invoices, certificates) without manual intervention. Common in banking, insurance, and pharma sectors.

Validity

DSC can be issued with a validity of 1 year or 2 years. Renew at least 30 days before expiry to avoid disruption in filings. The renewal process mirrors the initial application.

Licensed Certifying Authorities

  • eMudhra Limited
  • NSDL e-Gov (Protean)
  • Capricorn Identity Services
  • Sify Technologies
  • CDAC (for government use)

Step-by-Step Application Process

  1. Choose CA and DSC type based on your filing purpose
  2. Fill the online application form on the CA's website
  3. Submit documents: PAN card (mandatory), Aadhaar card, passport-size photo, email, and mobile number linked to Aadhaar. For organisational DSC, also submit an authorisation letter and company registration documents.
  4. Aadhaar OTP verification (paperless, instant) or video verification
  5. Receive DSC on a FIPS-compliant USB token โ€” the private key is stored securely on the token and cannot be exported

Aadhaar-Based e-Sign

For individual documents not requiring a hard token, the Aadhaar e-Sign service allows one-time signing via OTP โ€” valid for income tax ITR verification and certain banking/NBFC documents. This is not a substitute for a full DSC for MCA filing.

Cost of DSC

  • Class 3 Signing DSC (1 year): โ‚น800 โ€“ โ‚น1,500
  • Class 3 Signing DSC (2 years): โ‚น1,200 โ€“ โ‚น2,500
  • Class 3 Signing + Encryption (2 years): โ‚น1,500 โ€“ โ‚น3,500
  • USB Token (if not already owned): โ‚น500 โ€“ โ‚น1,000 additional

Common DSC Issues & Solutions

  • DSC not detected: Ensure token driver software is installed; try a different USB port or browser
  • Expired DSC: Renew before expiry โ€” most portals reject expired DSCs immediately
  • Wrong certificate selected: If multiple DSCs are stored on the token, select the correct one for the portal

Conclusion

A DSC is a foundational compliance requirement for any business operating in India today. Getting it right โ€” correct class, right CA, appropriate validity โ€” prevents filing delays and compliance gaps. Statura offers same-day DSC procurement assistance for individuals and organisations across all platforms.
