e-Way Bill: When It's Required and How to Generate It
An e-Way Bill is a digital document required for the movement of goods above a threshold value. Without it, goods can be detained and penalised in transit.
When it's needed
For inter-state (and often intra-state) movement of goods where the consignment value exceeds โน50,000 โ for sale, transfer, or even returns.
Who generates it
The supplier, recipient or transporter, on the e-Way Bill portal (or auto-linked from e-invoicing). It carries a unique EBN and validity based on distance.
Key parts
- Part A โ invoice, value, GSTINs, HSN
- Part B โ vehicle/transport details
Validity
Roughly one day per 200 km; expired bills need extension. Mismatches with the invoice are a common cause of detention.
