How to Import Korean Food & Snacks to India: FSSAI & Customs Guide
Korean food — from ramen and gochujang to snacks and beverages — is riding a wave of popularity in India. But food is a tightly regulated import governed by the FSSAI. Here is the path for a Korean food brand.
Step 1: FSSAI Central Licence
Any food importer needs an FSSAI Central Licence, which specifically authorises import activity. This is non-negotiable for customs clearance.
Step 2: Product Compliance
Imported food must meet Indian food-safety standards — permitted additives, contaminant limits, and shelf-life requirements. Products with non-standard ingredients may need product approval.
Step 3: Labeling Requirements
- Importer name and address, and country of origin.
- Veg/Non-veg symbol (green/brown mark) — mandatory in India.
- Ingredients, allergens, nutritional information.
- Manufacturing and expiry dates, with adequate residual shelf life on arrival.
- FSSAI logo and licence number of the importer.
Step 4: Customs Clearance
Imports are cleared through FSSAI's port clearance system, where samples may be drawn for testing. An IEC and correct HS classification are required, and CEPA may reduce duties on Korean-origin goods.
Common Challenges
Short residual shelf life, missing veg/non-veg marks, and additives not permitted in India are the top reasons consignments are rejected.
