Labeling Rules for Imported Cosmetics in India: What Korean Brands Must Know
Even with CDSCO registration in place, imported cosmetics are frequently held at customs for labeling non-compliance. Getting labels right is essential for smooth clearance and retail sale in India.
Mandatory Label Declarations
- Name of the product and its purpose.
- Net quantity in metric units.
- Maximum Retail Price (MRP) inclusive of all taxes.
- Name and address of the importer in India.
- Country of origin (Made in Korea).
- Manufacturing and import/expiry details.
- Full list of ingredients for packs above a certain size.
- Batch number and directions for use / warnings.
Language & Placement
Declarations must be legible and in English or Hindi. Where the Korean packaging lacks required details, a compliant sticker label can be applied before sale — but it must be firmly affixed and not cover key information.
Common Rejection Reasons
- Missing importer name/address or MRP.
- No country of origin.
- Ingredient list only in Korean.
- Stickers that peel off or hide mandatory text.
Best Practice
Finalise India-compliant artwork or sticker labels before shipping, and have them reviewed against both the Cosmetics Rules and Legal Metrology requirements.
