Legal Metrology Packaging Requirements for Korean Cosmetics in India
India's Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules govern how any pre-packaged product — including imported cosmetics — must be declared and priced. Korean brands and their Indian importers must comply on top of CDSCO registration.
Importer Registration
Any business importing pre-packaged goods must obtain a Legal Metrology importer registration from the Director of Legal Metrology within 90 days of starting imports.
Mandatory Declarations on the Pack
- Name and address of the importer.
- Common/generic name of the commodity.
- Net quantity in standard metric units.
- Month and year of import.
- Retail sale price as "MRP Rs ___ inclusive of all taxes".
- Consumer care contact details.
Rules on MRP
Only a single MRP is allowed per pack, it must be inclusive of all taxes, and selling above MRP is an offence. Dual or altered MRPs invite penalties.
Penalties
Non-compliance can attract fines and, for repeat offences, prosecution — and consignments can be detained at the port until corrected.
Practical Tip
Coordinate CDSCO labeling and Legal Metrology declarations together so a single compliant label satisfies both regimes.
